Here Come the Loans
For the first time this window, loans made up the majority of transfers in League One this week. This is to be expected at this point in the window as clubs further up the food chain are closer to finalising their squads for the coming season. Once these decisions have been made, the unwanted are identified and allowed to depart on loan.
Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer activity is a prime example of this. Lewis Wing has played 160 games for Middlesbrough but did not feature in Warnock’s plans for the coming season and was therefore allowed to join Wednesday on loan. Similarly, Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell was in a similar situation and has therefore joined the club temporarily. Finally, Wednesday completed their trio of loans with the signing of striker Florian Kamberi on a season long deal from Swiss side St. Gallen.
The trickle down is being felt below League One too as Sheffield Wednesday have sent Cameron Dawson out on loan to League Two Exeter, the stopper was first choice for the Sheffield club previously and has made 76 appearances in total. Similarly, Lincoln City’s Theo Archibald has been told he will not get first team football in the coming season and has joined Leyton Orient on loan.

Familiar Faces in Morecambe & Oxford
Morecambe continue their total summer rebuild with two more this week, bringing their total incomings to 15. Jonah Ayunga joined on an undisclosed fee from Bristol Rovers whilst Adam Phillips came in on loan from Burnley. Adam Phillips is no stranger to the Shrimpers, having been on loan at the club in both the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons already, making 36 appearances and scoring 12 goals in total.
Reunion was clearly the theme of the week at Oxford too. They brought in Nathan Holland and Gavin Whyte on loan from West Ham and Cardiff City respectively, the duo having spent time at the club previously between 2018 and 2020. Oxford completed their week with the loan signing of Jordan Thorniley, the centre back had been part of Blackpool’s promotion winning side last season.

Loans loans and more loans
Elsewhere, AFC Wimbledon continued their budding parent/feeder club relationship with Chelsea by adding full back Henry Lawrence to their ranks on a season long loan. Gillingham also looked to Chelsea to secure goalkeeper Jamie Cumming temporarily. Meanwhile, Fleetwood Town, MK Dons, and Plymouth all bolstered their squads with loans, securing Callum Morton from West Brom, Troy Parrott from Tottenham Hotspur, and Ryan Broom from Peterborough respectively.

Fees and frees
Once again Ipswich were the main players in the fee-paying market this week, bringing in two and selling one. Conor Chaplin and George Edmundson joined the club from Barnsley and Rangers respectively whilst Teddy Bishop departed for Lincoln City on an undisclosed fee. Elsewhere full back George Nurse joined Bristol Rovers from rivals City.
In the free agent market, Wycombe completed the double signing of former Welsh International Sam Vokes and centre back Jack Wakely from Stoke and Chelsea respectively. While Accrington Stanley (Josh Woods), Burton Albion (Ryan Leak), Cheltenham Town (Dylan Barkers), Crewe Alexandra (Callum McFazdean), Doncaster Rovers (Aidan Barlow), and MK Dons (Tennai Watson) secured one each.
